THE ROAN MOUNTAIN HILLTOPPERS

"DOWN HOME"- This band is the epitome of ragged but right. The cutting rhythm of the Birchfield family of Carter, Tennessee, makes my feet twitch involuntarily every time I hear it. I have tried in vain to approximate the rustic, energetic fiddle style of Joe Birchfield - the deceptive simplicity of his playing gave me encouragement. Joe makes it sound easy, but it ain't! Add Joe's brother Creede Birchfield on banjo, Joe's son Bill on guitar, autoharp and banjo, and get Bill's wife Janice a-thumpin on her washtub bass and you've got reason to holler and stomp your feet.
